The Full Story

Two postage stamps have been issued by Jamaica and Mexico as part of celebrations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both countries.

The stamps, which were designed and developed through the collaborative efforts of the Government of Jamaica, through the Post and Telecommunications Department, and the Government of Mexico, through its Embassy Mexican Post Office, are available at a cost of 60 cents each in Jamaica and 18 pesos in Mexico.

On the stamps are two species of butterflies, the Monarch and Giant Swallowtail, which can be found in Mexico and Jamaica.

Ceremonies to launch the stamps were held recently in both countries, one at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico and the other at the Mexican residence in Jamaica.

Undersecretary, Bilateral & Regional Affairs Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ambassador Joy Wheeler, commended the Post and Telecommunications Department and the postal entity in Mexico for their efforts in creating the stamps.

“After numerous discussions, designing, modification and final approval, we now welcome the ‘birth’ of this beautiful set of stamps, which reflects the 50-year journey of friendship and cooperation between Jamaica and Mexico,” she said.

She noted that over the years, the Jamaica-Mexico partnership has grown significantly, adding that the postage stamp has captured “our increasingly multidimensional and ever-vibrant bilateral relationship”.

Ambassador of the United Mexican States, Her Excellency, Cecilia Jaber, told JIS News that the stamps exemplify the similarities that exist between Mexico and Jamaica.

“Both butterflies are representative of our respective countries and we wanted to symbolise the bonds of friendship that we hope to project into the future,” she said, adding that the two countries have been working since February to design the stamps.

Ambassador Jaber said that activities were held throughout the year by the Mexican Embassy to celebrate the 50th anniversary.
