Snapshot

The Jamaica 55 Diaspora Conference first staged in 2004, is convened every two years by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in collaboration with a range of partners. The conference was recalibrated and rebranded in 2013 as a global forum for dialogue between Jamaicans overseas and at home to explore and develop deeper and mutually beneficial linkages.

Jamaicans living overseas have significant familial, cultural and emotional ties to their land of origin and contribute in major ways to national development. Diaspora engagement has been identified as one of eight main pillars of the Government of Jamaica’s socio-economic 5 in 4 growth initiative. This year’s conference is therefore of particular significance as Jamaica seeks to further the ongoing dialogue with its Diaspora.

After a successful sojourn in Montego Bay in 2013 and 2015, the conference will return to the capital of Kingston coinciding with the major Independence celebrations being planned. During this Official launch at Jamaica House, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, ON, MP will deliver the keynote address as details about the plans and preparations for this signature national event are unveiled.
