J. Wray & Nephew Foundation Lauded for Investment in Education

Senior Advisor to the Education Minister, Robert Miller, has lauded the J. Wray & Nephew (JWN) Foundation for its continued investment in the education of the nation’s youth.

Through its award of scholarships each year, Mr. Miller noted that the Foundation assists those students who are desirous of a solid education, but are “crippled by (the lack of) financial resources”.

Mr. Miller was speaking on Tuesday (August 29) during the entity’s awards ceremony for the disbursement of scholarships valued at $11.7 million to 65 students at the secondary and tertiary levels.

The function was held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.

The Senior Advisor implored the recipients to make the best of the opportunity they have been afforded and to continue to do well.

He also encouraged the students to give back to their communities by assisting those who may be having difficulties with a particular subject.

“Find someone in your community to assist with maths, to assist with English, whatever subject you can assist with – give back,” he urged.

Mr. Miller further encouraged parents to start saving for their children’s tertiary education from early, to be in better stead financially at the appointed time.

“In Jamaica, we tend not to promote higher learning, but we need, as a country, to start planning for tertiary education from birth by putting aside some money (towards that),” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the JWN Foundation, Clement Lawrence, also praised the recipients for working hard “under often less-than-ideal conditions”, noting that they are deserving of the Foundation’s assistance.

“Congratulations to all the students here today. The scholarship you have all received represents your dedication and hard work. We encourage you to remain committed to your goals, stay focused and maintain a positive attitude,” he said.

Over the past decade, the JWN Foundation has awarded more than $30 million to Jamaican students from communities within which it operates in Kingston, Clarendon and St. Elizabeth, assisting them to matriculate in their secondary and tertiary studies.
