The Full Story

The Natural History Division of the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) is hosting a summer programme for budding young scientists between six and 11 years of age.
The two-week programme, which will last from August 13 to 24, is dubbed, ‘Summer Science Camp’, and will take place in the Discovery Room at the IOJ on East Street, downtown Kingston. Speaking with JIS News, Education Outreach Officer at the Natural History Division, Sherene James-Williamson explained that the camp is designed to engage children in science through lessons, experiments and other related hands-on activities and supporting resources.
Students will be engaged in building their own insect, rock and herbarium collections and will mount displays and exhibitions. They will also go on trips with geologists, zoologists and botanists.
“We will give them a full field experience, then they will have to come back and write up experiments in-house,” the Education Outreach Officer pointed out.
She added that in-house activities would take place at the division’s Discovery Room, which is “an environment where the children will be able to touch exhibits and specimens and read for themselves.”
The science camp will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays. The cost is $3,500 per child with a discounted cost of $3,000 each for two or more children from the same household.
