The Full Story

President of the United States-based Benevolent Missions of Atlanta, Gail Dunwell, has been appointed International Donor Consultant for the National Education Trust (NET).

Her appointment was announced by Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, during his courtesy call on Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Audrey Marks, at the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, D.C. on November 10.

Senator Reid said Mrs. Dunwell will be responsible for identifying international donor organizations willing and able to work in Jamaica, whose strategies and areas of focus are consistent with NET.

Additionally, the Minister said she is required to develop a database of potential donors, detailing the extent of their interest in funding education development projects in Jamaica.

Senator Reid further explained that she will map funding opportunities from potential sources internationally and recommend strategies for engaging these.

Her other duties include: developing and recommending a strategy to guide NET’s fundraising efforts over the next two years; facilitating the dissemination of information between the Diaspora and NET through promotions, workshops, town hall meetings and fora; communicating concerns and challenges the Diaspora encounters in contributing to education in Jamaica; and developing solutions to improve the mechanisms and processes through which this is accomplished.

Senator Reid said NET’s vision is to engage the three million-strong Jamaican Diaspora community in the United States and leverage the members’ support in the development of education through infrastructure upgrades for early childhood and primary schools, adding that “Mrs. Dunwell will play a key role in the organization achieving those goals.”

The Minister pointed out that NET has partnered with the Jamaica Diaspora Education Task Force (JDETF); the Jamaica National Group, through its JN Foundation; and the Early Childhood Commission (ECC) to revamp the Pledge2Build Project.

Senator Reid was accompanied on the courtesy call by Mrs. Dunwell and ECC Chair, Trisha Williams-Singh.
