International Domestic Workers’ Day – Message by PM

MESSAGE BY
THE MOST HON. PORTIA SIMPSON MILLER, PRIME MINISTER
TO MARK
INTERNATIONAL DOMESTIC WORKERS’ DAY

JUNE 16, 2012

Jamaica aligns itself with global community in marking International Domestic Workers’ Day. In doing so, we pay tribute to and value the services and contribution of the estimated 58,000 domestic workers in Jamaica.

At all levels throughout the society, the benefits of your service as domestic workers can be seen as it is you who help to take care of the children, the elderly and other family members while also allowing others the opportunity to pursue their educational, professional and career advancement.  It is therefore fitting that there is a day dedicated in the year to honour your worth, contribution and the services you give to others.

Jamaica has a history of advancing the cause of domestic workers. A significant step in this direction was made in 1996 when the government guided the formation of the Jamaica Household Workers’ Association (JHWA) and place responsibility for this important group under the supervision of the Bureau of Women’s Affairs.  The move gave the domestic worker a voice and status that has since kept their issues on the national agenda.

For its part, your Association has remain an active advocate, organizing seminars and training session that have improved the employability and job satisfaction of domestic workers. I salute all of you for being proud Jamaicans who are showing the world how to be a dignified lifelong domestic worker.

Jamaica is committed to further advancing your cause. Through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the drafting of the necessary legislative amendments to allow for ratification of the International Labour Organization Convention concerning Decent Work for Domestic Workers is currently being undertaken.

In saluting you on this day, I recognize all our domestic workers – men and women, at home and abroad, who are doing their part in nation-building by allowing others to aspire and achieve, while often putting a strain on your own families and life choices.

The Most Hon Portia Simpson Miller
