School Garden to be Established at Gregory Park Primary on Labour Day

The establishment of a school garden at the Gregory Park Primary School in Portmore, St. Catherine is to be the major focus of the Portmore Municipality on Labour Day (May 23).
This will be in line with the theme for the day, 'Eat what we grow.Grow what we eat', and the Government's thrust to increase agricultural production islandwide, in light of the rising cost of food on the world market.
Portmore's Mayor, Keith Hinds told JIS News that the Gregory Park Primary School garden project as well as the many other projects that are to be undertaken on Labour Day in Portmore, have received much support from private and public sector companies within and outside the municipality.
"West Indies Home Contractors have donated some earth to create the garden and the Ministry of Agriculture will be providing seedlings to support that project," the Mayor said.
Portmore will receive a $100,000 contribution from the government to assist with the funding of its labour day projects.
The Mayor said that in addition to the school garden project, several others would be undertaken, including the painting of pedestrian crossings and painting of the Bridgeport police station.
"There is also going to be an urban gardening initiative, where we will be giving out planter kits, because we want to teach people how to start to farm in their backyard," he added.
The Mayor pointed out that an effort would be made to seek the help of agriculturists living within the municipality to ensure that the correct information is given to persons setting up backyard gardens.
He said that based on the response he has received from colleague councillors and others in the municipality, Labour Day in Portmore is expected to be fully supported.
