Establishment of Greenhouse Plot Parish Project in St. Thomas

KINGSTON (JIS): Monday, May 19, 2008

The setting up of an agricultural plot, and usage of greenhouse technology, at the St. Thomas Technical High School, Golden Grove, is the parish project selected for Labour Day 2008 under the theme: 'Eat what we grow.Grow what you eat'.
Government has been promoting the use of greenhouse technology as a way of boosting agricultural production, as a result of the high yield of crops grown using the technology.
Regional Manager, Social Development Commission (SDC), Luther Cummings told JIS News that the project was selected because "agriculture is a top priority on the school's curriculum." He said the school would also benefit from the project.
He pointed out that technical assistance as well as seedlings would be provided by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), in the setting up of the greenhouse system.
Meanwhile, Mr. Cummings said a Parish Labour Day Committee has been set up to identify projects within the communities and to seek funding from private entities in the parish.
"We are awaiting their responses," he said, adding that over 80 letters have been sent out to business operations within the parish seeking funds. He said the committee has received a contribution of some $100,000 from Government for Labour Day activities.
According to Mr. Cummings, communities would be sensitized about Labour Day activities through members of the Area Development Committees, who have been invited to the Labour Day committee meetings. "They have been getting their communities together and getting the projects in," he said.
