Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange (centre), addresses the girls of Elsie Bemand Girls' Home, in recognition of 'Read Across Jamaica Day', at the Ministry's New Kingston offices on Tuesday (May 6). Read Across Jamaica Day is one of the many activities to celebrate Education Week 2008, which ends on May 9.

Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange has emphasised the importance of education in the growth of persons and the development of the country.

"Mathematics and English Language are the two subjects you will have to work very hard at, because they are like the tracks in your life. These two subjects (along with others) are going to carry you forward in life," the Minister told girls of the Elsie Bemand Home in Kingston.

Addressing the girls on 'Read Across Jamaica Day', yesterday (May 6), at the Ministry's New Kingston offices, Miss Grange encouraged them to stay focused and committed to whatever tasks they undertook.

She pointed out that they would face challenges in those areas, but with continuous practice, they would overcome.

The Minister said there is nothing hard or impossible in life, and explained that the role of obstacles that individuals face in life is to challenge one's ability in dealing with issues which would occur.

Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange (centre), reads to the girls of Elsie Bemand Girls' Home, in recognition of 'Read Across Jamaica Day', at the Ministry's New Kingston offices on Tuesday (May 6). Read Across Jamaica Day is one of the many activities to celebrate Education Week 2008, which ends on May 9.

Miss Grange read excerpts from four different books to the girls, including 'More Than A Nurse: Mary Seacole as Wife, Mother and Businesswoman' from the Jamaica Journal by Aleric J. Joseph; 'Thoughts on Success: Thoughts and Reflections' from History's Greatest Thinkers; 'Don't Sweat The Small Stuff.and it's all small stuff' by Richard Carlson; and 'The Little Kitten: A Little Angel's Storybook' by Nancy Parent.

Read Across Jamaica Day is one of the many activities to celebrate Education Week 2008, which ends on May 9.

Parliamentarians, entertainers, media practitioners, private sector and public sector representatives, teachers, students, parents, the church and all other stakeholders in the education system participated in activities that promoted interest and involvement in reading.

Education Week is celebrated annually to draw national focus to the importance of education to national growth and development. It also serves to recognize and celebrate the achievements of those persons, in particular the teachers, who continue to make a difference in the lives of children.
