International Anti-Corruption Day

December 9 is International Anti-Corruption Day. The aim of the observance is to raise awareness about corruption and of the role of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption in combating and preventing it. The observance also presents an opportunity to highlight the steps taken by the Government to fight corruption in Jamaica.

Initiatives such as the passage of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transactions) (Special Provisions) Act, 2013, commonly referred to as the ‘Lotto Scam Act’, and the Criminal Justice (Suppression of Criminal Organisations) Act, 2014, also known as the anti-gang legislation, have helped to strengthen Jamaica’s ability to tackle corruption.

Efforts have also been made to strengthen the channels through which the investigation and prosecution of acts of corruption are carried out. This has come in the form of the merger of the two main anti-corruption organisations, Anti-Corruption Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Task Force (MOCA).

The new organisation is now known as MOCA.

The Government also encourages the public to lend its support to the fight against corruption by helping to increase awareness of it and by reporting suspected cases of corruption to the relevant authorities.
