After an Earthquake – Part 1

Check for Injuries

• After an earthquake, the most important thing to do is to check for injuries among family members and neighbours.
• Qualified persons should administer first aid, where necessary.
• Seriously injured persons should not be moved unless they are in immediate danger of further injury.

 Check for Damage

• Check for fires and fire hazards. Where necessary, contact the fire department for assistance. If making contact is difficult or impossible, use water in swimming pools and water tanks for firefighting.
• Check utility lines (water and electricity) for damage. Shut off the main switches if there are damages.
• Check gas appliances for damage and leaks. Shut off the main switch if there are damages or leaks.
• Carefully check closets and other storage areas for objects that may have fallen or become dislodged.

 Minimise Further Problems

• Clean up spilled flammable liquids, medicines, shattered glass, debris and other harmful substances as soon as possible.
• Anticipate and be careful of aftershocks, which can cause the collapse of already damaged structures.
• Wear boots and a hard hat, as broken glass and other debris may be in the area.
• Do not use matches, lighters, or any other source of open flame until all existing gas leaks are fixed.
• Do not use electrical appliances until all gas leaks are fixed, as electrical sparks may ignite the gas.
