Tourism Minister, Ed Bartlett, has said that $50 million will be allocated for the development of sustainable tourism projects in schools, under phase two of the 'Spruce up Jamaica' programme.
"We are going to be putting aside $50 million in this year under 'Spruce Up Jamaica' to drive a programme of sustainable development within our schools, particularly in the resort areas," the Minister said, as he addressed the recent commissioning of a solar energy system at the Irwin High School in St. James.
"We want to make sure that our students are fully au fait with all of the best practices that must be pursued and embraced to secure sustainable development and to sustain tourism, so that it can continue to be the principal element of job creation and economic empowerment in our country," he stated.
The Minister informed that the second phase of the project will get underway soon and will announce further details of the work to be undertaken during his Sectoral presentation on May 14.
'Spruce up Jamaica' is aimed at establishing a more attractive and aesthetically inviting environment in the resort towns of the island, and in so doing, change the attitude, behavior and also influence the relationship of residents in those areas. The programme is a public/private sector collaboration and is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism through the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo), the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) and the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB).
