Indigent Housing to be Reviewed – Minister Mckenzie

Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, says the indigent housing programme will be reviewed during the new financial year in order to improve response to those in need.

He said there will be increases in allocations to infirmaries and steps will be taken to strengthen institutions that deal with persons living on the streets.

“We are already spending in excess of $185 million to build new wards in infirmaries across the island. In Portland, we’re building two, in Manchester, one; an administrative office and other facilities. In St. Elizabeth, in excess of $25 million is being spent for a new administrative building and a new infirmary in St. James,” the Minister noted.

He said he will be meeting shortly with all persons involved in poor relief administration islandwide to discuss the entire indigent programme. A special meeting will be held in St. James where a new infirmary is to be built.

The meeting in Ocho Rios was the third in a series of regional sensitisation sessions for local government representatives. It involved representatives from St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland.

Presentations were made by Minister McKenzie and technical officers of the Ministry, Contractor General Dirk Harrison and officers from the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service.

The two-day sessions began in Kingston on January 4, and meetings have been held in Manchester and St. James.
