This health fair is the first initiative of the Cancer Control Jamaica project. The project represents a partnership of the Jamaican Consulate in New York, the Jamaica Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society and was instituted to utilize the resources of Jamaicans living in the United States to effectively fight cancer in Jamaica through prevention, education, research and advocacy.

Janet Madden, Community Relations Officer and a member of the Cancer Control Jamaica project, said that the programme was seeking to make tangible contributions to the fight against cancer in Jamaica.

She added, “by raising funds, conducting needs assessments and by supporting capacity building efforts, Cancer Control Jamaica and our people abroad have an integral role to play in addressing the needs of Jamaicans at home.”

At present, cancer is the third leading cause of death in Jamaica, accounting for 17.7 per cent of all deaths in 1999. For additional information on Cancer Control Jamaica and the Jamaican Women Abroad Health Fair, please call the Jamaican Consulate in New York at 212 935 9000 ext. 31.
