HAJ Hands Over Luana Housing Development to Municipal Corporation

The Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) recently handed over Phase 1 of its Luana housing development to the St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation, following a payment of $13.9 million by the agency to the Corporation.

The handover means that any further infrastructural development or maintenance of the settlement will be undertaken and monitored by the Parish Council, including the construction and repair of parochial roads, the processing of building permits for home improvement, and maintenance of any public sanitary conveniences in accordance with the Public Health Act.

Managing Director of the HAJ, Gary Howell, said the agency has successfully honoured seven of eight commitments made to the residents within the development, including electricity connection, repair of the sewerage treatment plant, titling for the community common area, water supply and drain cleaning, among others.

“We are happy that we have been able to make good on the greater part of our promise, and the citizens welcome the development that has taken place,” said Mr. Howell.

Luana Phase 1 is part of a larger three-phase project consisting of 727 serviced lots located a few kilometres north of Black River in South St. Elizabeth.

Meanwhile, the HAJ is slated to hand over a completed potable water supply project in Whitehall, Negril, in January 2018.
