The Full Story

The Haitian refugees in temporary shelters in Portland are to be relocated to the Montpelier site in St. James as soon as minor works at the facility are completed.

Information Minister, Senator Burchell Whiteman who gave an update on the relocation of the Haitian refugees on Monday (March 29) at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, said the work involved additional repairs to the sanitation facilities at the site.

Plans to relocate the refugees on Sunday were averted because of minor problems found by a team from the Ministry of Health who inspected the property.

Some of the problems detected during the inspection were that the male bathrooms and the manhole covers were not completed.

“The Minister of Land and Environment is fairly satisfied that it’s a matter of days and hours rather than another week before the corrections that need to be made to the premise will be done and that the transfer can begin,” said Minister Whiteman.

The Haitians who had fled their homeland due to civil unrest are being accommodated by the Jamaican Government at a cost of $36 million.

Meanwhile, answering questions as it relates to Former President of Haiti, Jean Bertrand Aristide’s decision to seek a permanent residence, Senator Whiteman said, “the situation as described by the Prime Minister remains, that is, he (the Former President) has been invited here to remain at his request for a period of up to 10 weeks and I think that the situation is still the case. He may leave earlier but that is still the situation and there is no fundamental deviation from that”.
