Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo for 5-day Working Visit to Jamaica

President of the Republic of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, is expected to arrive in Jamaica on Friday (July 31) for a five-day working visit at the invitation of Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding. He will be accompanied by his Presidential Advisor on Community Development Mr. Odinga Lumumba.
President Jagdeo’s first assignment on Friday (July 31) will be a tour of the JB Ethanol Plant at Port Esquivel, St. Catherine. In the evening he will attend the Emancipation Jubilee at Seville in St Ann.
The Guyanese President is to be a special guest at the Emancipation day Ceremony at the Emancipation Square in Spanish Town St. Catherine on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday August 2 he will be a guest at the Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show which he will address.
On Monday the President will meet with other Caricom Heads of Government Task Force on the Regional and Economic crisis at the Office of the Prime Minister.
Bharrat Jagdeo is one of the youngest Heads of Government in the world having been appointed as Guyana’s President in 1999 at the age of 35. In 2001, he was elected President, and was re-elected in September 2006. In September 2005, President Jagdeo was elected Chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a position he occupied until September 2006.
He has been awarded the Pushkin Medal by the Government of Russia, and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award by the Government of India.
In recent years, President Jagdeo has spoken frequently of the need for developing countries to be in the forefront in identifying solutions to avert the worst extremes of climate change, and has repeatedly raised the issue at the United Nations and summits of Latin American and Commonwealth Heads of Government.
