The Full Story

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has said that “the world’s greatest athlete, Usain Bolt, has delivered again.”

The Minister was reacting after Bolt won the 200 metres sprint last evening at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Bolt equalled his season’s best time of 19.78 seconds to win the gold medal.

Minister Grange said “we may not realise just yet what a privilege it is for us to live in the time of Usain Bolt who continues to set record after record after record. Jamaica’s Bolt is a once-in-a-lifetime athlete.”

It was Bolt’s third consecutive Olympic 200 metres title; he’s also won the 100 metres titles at three consecutive games — no other person has achieved either or both.

Bolt expressed some disappointment at not breaking the world record this evening, but Minister Grange the country and world are satisfied with his efforts.

Minister Grange (@babsy_grange) tweeted: “He’s done it! The world’s greatest athlete @usainbolt delivers again. Thank you, Usain, from a grateful nation. #TeamJamaica #rio2016.”

Bolt’s victory in the 200 metres completed a historic sweep for Jamaica.  It was the first time any country had swept the 100 and 200 metres sprints in both men’s and women’s competitions at an Olympic Games.

Minister Grange again paid tribute to Jamaica’s athletes, local coaches, the national athletics system and everyone contributing to the country’s sports success.

Earlier, Jamaica had three women in the 400 metres hurdles final — Ristananna Tracey and Leah Nugent (who both recorded personal best times) as well as Janieve Russell.

Annsert Whyte also recorded his career’s best time in the men’s 400 metres hurdles final.

O’Dayne Richards finished 8th in the men’s shot put.

“Although they did not medal this time, Ristananna, Leah, Janieve, Annsert and O’Dayne did very well,” said the Minister.

In the meantime, Jamaica’s women’s and men’s teams qualified for the finals of the 4×100 metres.
