The Honourable Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport says a “special moment in Jamaica’s aquatic history” occurred with both the swimming and diving pools at the National Aquatics Centre now fully upgraded.

Minister Grange was speaking at the function at which the diving pool was officially reopened yesterday (May 18).

According to her, “the rehabilitation and upgrade of the diving pool will facilitate our national swimmers, our regional and international competitions as well as nurture our developmental programmes”.

Minister Grange also highlighted that, “cost of the rehabilitation and upgrade of the diving pool is 14.4 million dollars”.

Major work was previously done on the swimming pool at a cost of over thirty million dollars.

The Minister said that with the upgraded facilities both the water polo and the synchronised swimming teams are encouraged to hone their skills.
She said the Ministry is working closely with the synchronised swimming team to identify a national coach in order to ensure the full revitalisation of “this beautiful and important branch of aquatics”.

Meanwhile, Major Desmon Brown, General Manager of Independence Park Limited, urged members of the national water polo team to “use the pool well, take care of it [and] not let allow anyone destroy it.”
