Gov’t to Clean up and Beautify Country in New Legislative Year

The Government, during the 2007/08 legislative year, will intensify its ongoing efforts to clean up and beautify the country.
This was stated today (March 29) by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Professor Kenneth Hall, while delivering his Throne Speech in Parliament.
Pointing to efforts that would be made in this regard, Professor Hall said that the government would provide the required resources to the relevant state agencies in central and local government, for the job to be done in an efficient and effective manner.
In addition, he said, the activities of the various agencies involved would be streamlined, to among other things, reduce duplication and get better value for money.
He noted further that discussions would continue with various civic and non-state actors including communities, to assist in the effort, while the security forces would be required to enforce the Anti-Litter Act and other relevant laws.
Professor Hall cited the National Best Community Competition as an initiative that has assisted the government’s efforts to clean up and beautify the country, adding that some 179 communities, almost one-quarter of the total number in Jamaica, have applied to participate in this competition.
