The Full Story

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government will be placing focus on the development of Falmouth, noting that the town has the potential to become a tourism Mecca.

He noted that while Falmouth continues to dominate the cruise ship landscape, its rich culture and history have not been tapped.

“The town has so much history; the architecture is there, the people are there who are friendly and welcoming,” he said, noting that there are matters relating to public order, cleanliness, and organisation that must be addressed.

“I want it to be known publicly that I will be taking a personal interest in ensuring that Falmouth town itself is given the attention it deserves,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister said that while the all-inclusive concept has served Jamaica well, it is in the best interest of all concerned if the visitor goes out and experiences the real Jamaica.

“You may find that they (tourists) may very well choose to say ‘let me go to the pub, or to the bar, or go to a dance, or go somewhere’. The tourist will now go back home and say ‘I had a true Jamaican experience’. Now, everybody benefits from that,” he pointed out.

The Prime Minister noted that tourism, as the leading foreign exchange earner, is a critical sector in the country’s growth thrust.

He acknowledged the “tremendous work” of portfolio Minister, the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, in enhancing the tourism product.

The project is being undertaken by the Excellence Group, which is renowned for its award-winning luxury properties.

Some 2,200 jobs will be created for Jamaicans during the building and operation phases.
