Governor General Urges Scout Association To Use Technology To Reach Youth

The Governor-General was speaking at a ceremony to officially install businessman Richard Simpson as the new President of the Scout Association of Jamaica, held Friday (October 6) at King’s House.

Custos Rotulorum for the parish of Kingston, Steadman Fuller, and several members of the Scout movement attended the Renewal of Promise ceremony.

Mr. Simpson succeeds Dr. the Hon. Oliver Jones, who served as President of the Association for 27 years.

Sir Patrick, who is Chief Scout, congratulated the new Scout leader and   commended the Scout Association of Jamaica for its unwavering commitment to youth development.

The new President, for his part, pledged to “leave the Scout Association of Jamaica stronger and better than I found it and to make it an institution that is relevant to our country and our youth”.

Mr. Simpson is a Justice of the Peace and certified mediator. He also supports several charities such as the Best Care Foundation, Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities, and Jamaica Cancer Society.

The new Scout leader will be conferred the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Officer (OD) in recognition of his contribution to the groundwater well industry at the National Honours and Awards ceremony slated for National Heroes Day, October 16.

Established in 1910, the mandate of the Scout Association of Jamaica is to contribute to the education of young people through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.
