The Full Story

The Government is committed to expanding the acquisition of Pinnacle lands in Sligoville, St. Catherine, and prioritising the establishment of a Rastafarian Heritage Site and Cultural Centre.

This was disclosed by Portfolio Minister, Hon. Olivia Grange, during her contribution to the 2016/17 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on July 12.

She said of the eight sites that will be declared by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT), the Government is dedicated to the declaration and development of six lots on the Pinnacle lands in Sligoville as a heritage site for the Rastafarian community.

She said to date, Cabinet has approved the purchase of five lots – 198 to 202 – and negotiations will take place to execute the sale of these five lots at an agreed price.

In the meantime, she said a JNHT team has concluded exploratory work on the sixth lot and will inform her on the outcome of the venture.

The Minister noted that part of the property has already been declared a National Monument and is protected and preserved in accordance with the JNHT Act.

Ms. Grange said UNESCO has officially recognised that the Rastafari community is indigenous to this country, “and it is fitting that we must all acknowledge this legacy which has produced a world-renowned religion and iconic personalities such as Bob Marley and Peter Tosh”.
