Global Local Govt/Culture Workshop Starts Today in Kingston

The Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon Sir Patrick Allen, Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding and His Worship the Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Desmond Mckenzie, are to attend the Inter-city Intangible Cultural Co-operation Network (ICCN) International Workshop’s opening at the Jamaica Conference Centre Kingston at nine Tuesday morning (September 15).
The workshop, being held under the theme, ‘Local Government at the Forefront of Preserving our Intangible Cultural Heritage’, will end on Thursday. The ICCN is an international organisation of Local Governments, which aims at safeguarding and promoting Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in close co-operation with UNESCO.
This initiative was developed at the International Round Table of Mayors on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004, in Korea. The Mayor of Kingston has been Chairman of the Roundtable of Mayors since 2008.
Mayors and City officials from some 50 countries are expected to attend the meeting, which will discuss various aspects of Local Government involvement in the safeguarding of intangible culture.
Other events on the programme include: a dinner at Fort Charles, Port Royal on Tuesday night, to be addressed by Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett; and an Appreciation Dinner at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday (September 16), to be followed by an evening of excellence at the Courtleigh Auditorium in Kingston.
