The Full Story

Moments before she heard her name, 11-year-old Jhanel Lalor said she was trembling with nervousness, but when it was announced that she was the 2015 winner of the essay component of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Heritage Essay and Poster Competitions, she sprang from her seat in obvious relief and jubilation.

“I feel very glad and I am just so excited,” the George Headley Primary School student told JIS News, following the awards ceremony, held today (November  27), at King’s House.

Her mother, Andrea Ennis-Lalor, was also beaming with pride as she celebrated her daughter’s hard-won achievement.

“I am very happy that she won. She put in a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication and a lot of research. She is a confident person and she knew from the very start that she would have been in the top five,” Mrs. Ennis-Lalor said.

Jhanel’s essay, which creatively describes circumstances from the life of National Hero, the Right Excellent Paul Bogle, was one of 90 entries from primary-level students submitted in this year’s competition, under the theme: ‘A Day in the Life of My Favourite National Hero’.

She walked away with movie tickets from one of the competition’s sponsors, Palace Amusement; a $15,000 gift certificate from Jamaica National; $15,000 cash from the NCB Foundation; a tablet from Singer; a weekend for four from FDR Resorts; a trophy sponsored by WB Trophies, and the JIS trophy.

Meanwhile, fifteen-year-old Orane Black from Anchovy High school copped the top award in the Poster component of the competition, walking away with $15,000 in cash from Guardian Life; a tablet from Innovative Corporate Solutions; a Graphics Course from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts;  a trophy sponsored by  WB Trophies, and the JIS trophy.

Orane said this competition was perfect for him, as he aspires to pursue a career in architecture or in an artistic field.

“I am so overjoyed, words can’t explain. I was really nervous at first, but I prayed to God and I (remained) confident,’ he said.

Chief Executive Officer of the JIS, Donna-Marie Rowe, in her opening remarks, hailed the participants in the competition for submitting entries, which she described as being of high quality. She commended the awardees, noting that many students displayed a high level of understanding and maturity in their submissions.

“We at the JIS have learnt over the years never to underestimate the intelligence and capability of our students, as they research the history and extract the lessons from our nation’s past,” she said.

Mrs. Rowe  announced that the agency is working to expand the reach of the competition to include a photography component targeting tertiary students in the upcoming year.

“We are investing in our children, because we are aware that many of the goals of Vision 2030 Jamaica will only be met by the full participation of this generation,” she said, while also expressing thanks to the sponsors and partners of the JIS Heritage Competition for their investment in national development.

Deputy Governor-General, Hon. Steadman Fuller, who is Custos of Kingston, commended  the JIS for the competition, which he says is a magnificent tool for the personal and professional development of the nation’s youth and children.

“I applaud the JIS for adhering to its mandate, remaining relevant to the youth and children of our nation, cultivating life skills and creating much-needed opportunities, while heightening awareness of our national heritage,” he said.

Mr. Fuller further noted that the themes covered each year encapsulate Jamaica’s rich and diverse cultural history.

He said the competition serves to equip the entrants with life skills, as well as hone their critical thinking skills.

“Critical thinking is one of those tacit qualities employers voraciously seek, therefore never take for granted the value of this competition for your development,” he advised the students.

Abigail Spalding from Ardenne Prep and Extension High was awarded second place in the Poster component and Jody Levy from Decarteret College received prizes for third place. Meanwhile, in the Essay component, Austin Ferguson from Cockburn Gardens Primary came in second and Delorna Garrick from Linstead Primary was third.

Last year, the Poster component was added to the competition, which has been ongoing for five years and previously accepted only essay entries.

Other sponsors of the event this year include: the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), the Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS), Royale Computers & Accessories, Frame Art Jamaica, Stephen Jones Landscaping and the Creative Production and Training Centre (CPTC).
