The Full Story

A Gender Mainstreaming Manuel (GMM) has been developed, which will serve as a quick guide to support the implementation of various policies and programmes to promote gender equality.

The manual, developed by the Gender Affairs Division of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, was made possible through funding from the United Nations Fund for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (UN Women).

Addressing a JIS Think Tank on February 22, Director of Policy and Research, Bureau of Gender Affairs, Sharon Coburn Robinson, said the GMM will assist with the mainstreaming of gender at the national level.

Gender mainstreaming is a strategy for making women and men’s concerns and experiences an integral part of the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes in all political, economic and societal spheres, so that both genders benefit equally.

Mrs. Coburn Robinson said the manual is easy to read and understand.

“It presents gender mainstreaming from a Jamaican perspective, thus making the solutions more applicable while maintaining the national standards of the National Policy for Gender Equality that was approved in 2011,” she informed.

Mrs. Coburn Robinson said the GMM was developed in keeping with the Gender Affairs Division’s mandate, which is to support widespread understanding and adoption of gender mainstreaming as a strategy and to promote gender equality through collaboration between the Government and key stakeholders.

She said the GMM will be distributed to Gender Focal Points within key Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as partners of the Bureau of Gender Affairs and other persons in the public sector.

Chief Executive Officers and Permanent Secretaries of the MDAs have already received their copies.

Mrs. Coburn Robinson said the document could also be consulted by private-sector entities before a project development or policy activity “to make sure there is a benefit and a very strategic benefit for women and men”.

The Think Tank focused on activities for International Women’s Day to be observed on March 8 under the theme ‘Unite to End Gender-based Violence’.
