G-G Lauds Work of National Parent-Teacher Association

Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, has commended the National Parent Teachers’ Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ), saying that it has helped parents to better contribute to their children’s education and overall development.
“With the formation of the NPTAJ five years ago, a medium was created that would facilitate greater partnership among parents, teachers and the school community. By turning the spotlight on parenting and family values, the (organisation) is helping to reposition the family, supported by the school community, as the primary social unit,” he stated.
The Governor-General was delivering the keynote address at the NPTAJ’s 4th General Conference on Friday July 9 at the St. Elizabeth Technical High School campus.
He made a plea for more fathers to be involved in the development of their children, noting that research has consistently proven their importance in the parenting process.
“When fathers are absent, children are affected emotionally and socially, and develop behaviour problems. Children learn by example and experience, so fathers must be the significant influence in their lives,” he stated.
“Children need role models, who can show them pathways to responsible adulthood,” he added.
