Funds Allocated for Energy Conservation in Schools

More than $90 million has been allocated for energy conservation in schools, and the development of special education centres in the 2017-18 budget.

This is outlined in the Estimates of Expenditure which was tabled in the House of Representatives on February 9.

During the next financial year, energy audits and structural assessment of 30 secondary schools will be completed, as well as procurement of the services of a project advisor to begin preparatory work for the project.

The energy project is given $61 million in the quest to reduce electricity bills at the schools by between 40 and 70 per cent, and create an energy conservation and efficiency culture through the implementation of recommendations from energy audits from the institutions.

From the $32 million earmarked for the establishment of special education diagnostic centres, the facility located on the St. James-based Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College will be completed.

Other centres are being developed at Church Teachers’ College, in Manchester, and at the Portland-based College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE).
