Jamaica will be featured in two special programmes to be broadcast on the BBC as part of its coverage of the 2008 Chelsea Flower Show.

The programmes, which will be aired on Sunday, May 18 and Monday May 19 will look at the historic links between Britain and Jamaica and the passion for flowers, and also the Jamaica Horticultural Society's (JHS) 'Going for Gold' at this year's show.

There is extensive coverage of Jamaica in the programmes as the BBC team explored the history of the island, starting from the arrival of Columbus, the take over by the British, the years of sugar and slavery, with the focus always on the lush and diverse flora. There is also a focus on the naturalist, Hans Sloane and the publication of his 'Natural History of Jamaica' in 1707. The team visited Spanish Town, Port Royal, and Bath in
St. Thomas .

The programmes will add to the excitement that has been mounting around this year's Chelsea Flower Show, which is the most prestigious event of the gardening calendar.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding is expected to be on the show on May 19, to support the JHF, that will be showcasing 'Island Bounty'. The display aims to recreate a scene out of tropical Jamaica, capturing the colours, smells, and shapes of the island.

This will be the Society's 13th year at the show. The Jamaican team will be led by Blossom Leven and will include acclaimed orchid grower, Claude Hamilton. Seeking to demonstrate the rich horticultural relationship between the UK and Jamaica, the JHS has collaborated with Mr. Hamilton to create a unique and rare display, inspired by the abundance of palm trees and the vibrant colours of the Heliconia, Anthurium, Alpinia Pururata, and fruits of the island.

Mr. Hamilton will be bringing Jamaican endemic Orchids and Cattleya as well as his award-winning hybrid Orchids to the stand.
