Flash Flood Warning Remains in Effect for Southern, Northeastern Parishes

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is urging citizens to continue to be alert as the rainfall affecting sections of the island is expected to continue throughout the day. The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has advised that the Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for low-lying and flood prone areas of St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland.

A Flash Flood Watch also remains in effect for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Hanover, St. James, Trelawny, and St. Ann and is effective until 5:00 p.m. today.

The ODPEM has received reports of the impact in the following parishes;
• Clarendon
• St Catherine
• St Ann
• Manchester
• St Thomas

The Rio Cobre River in the Bog Walk Gorge is at a critical level and as a result that corridor may be closed soon. The Disaster Committee in the affected parishes are expected to activate their Parish Emergency Operations Centre and open Shelters as necessary. Persons are again urged to take the necessary steps to protect life.

• A FLASH FLOOD WARNING means flooding has been reported or will occur shortly. Motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to cross flooded roadways or other lowlying areas as strong currents are likely.

Residents in low-lying areas should be on the alert for rising waters and be ready to move quickly to higher ground.

• A FLASH FLOOD WATCH means that flash flooding is possible and residents are advised to take precautionary measures, keep informed by listening to further releases from the Meteorological Service and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a Warning is issued.
