The Full Story

Jamaica  will  observe its 55th year on August 6 since becoming an independent nation in 1962, and celebratory activities leading up to that event have so far been impressive.

However, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia “Babsy” Grange, is promising more with a planned two-day fireworks display.

The Minister told  JIS News that this will be accomplished through a partnership with  the Chinese Government.

On August 6 the Emancipation/Independence celebrations usually culminate with the traditional ‘Grand Gala’  at the National Stadium, featuring several hundred performers, costumed and uniformed groups.

“Everybody comes to the Grand Gala to see the fireworks. Well, this year we have the most spectacular fireworks that have ever been seen in Jamaica and this has been made possible through collaboration with the People’s Republic of China and we are very grateful for their support. So, the Grand Gala fireworks will be spectacular and on the Monday (August 7), it will be even more explosive,” she said.

The Minister is calling on Jamaicans to come out and experience the fireworks, which will be spectacular.

“So, on Monday (August 7), you can go downtown and experience an even more explosive display of fireworks,” she added.

The Minister is also encouraging Jamaicans across the country to go out to their town centres islandwide, where there will also be celebratory activities.
