Firefighters in Portland observe Fire Safety Week

The Portland Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade is observing Fire Safety Awareness Week from October 24 to October 30 under the theme: ‘Partnering with communities for fire safety’.
Activities got underway on (Oct. 24) with a national church service at the Buff Bay Emanuel Gospel Hall and an exposition and lecture will be held on (Oct. 25) at the Portland Parish Library in Port Antonio.
On October 26 and 28, outreach activities to promote fire safety will be held in the communities of Bybrook, Comfort Castle and Mill Bank, while there will be a fire drill and safety presentation at the Muirton Boys Home in Manchioneal on October 27; and practical demonstrations on fire extinguisher usage at the Portland Infirmary on Friday October 29.
Also during the week, schools will participate in guided tours of the Port Antonio Fire Station.
Speaking to the JIS News, District Officer Windell Patterson said the week of observance will place special focus on fire safety in schools, children’s homes and places of safety, infirmaries, and homes for the aged.
He informed that private dwellings and public buildings will also be inspected to ensure that the required standards for fire prevention are being observed.
The District Officer is urging full support for the activities planned, which he said, will increase knowledge of fire safety and fire prevention.
