Ferncourt High Wins JIS Heritage Debate

Ferncourt High School has emerged the winner of the St. Ann Regional finals of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Heritage Debate competition, held recently at the Marcus Garvey Technical High School in the parish.
The team of three students proudly walked away with the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo) trophy plus three replicas, while Abaka Fitz-Henley received an individual trophy from JPSCo, and a history book from KDC Food Mart, for being the Best Speaker in the competition.
First runner-up school, Marcus Garvey Technical High, received a trophy from Brown’s Town Pharmacy; plaques from the Kiwanis Club of the Garden Parish and vouchers valued at $3 000 each from the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), Ocho Rios branch. Brown’s Town High, which took third position, walked away with three Oxford dictionaries donated by Minister of Industry and Tourism, Aloun Ndombet-Assamba and medals donated by the Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Councillor Delroy Giscombe.
All the participants were also presented with pens from JPSCo; hardcover exercise books donated by Great House Pharmacy in Ocho Rios and books and certificates of participation from the JIS.
Teachers for the teams received cellular phones from Tripple Super Save, Brown’s Town and day passes and dinners courtesy of Royal Plantation Spa & Golf Resort, and Beaches Grande Sport Villa Golf Resort & Spa, Ocho Rios.
Commending the participants for their effort, Chief Judge, Marcia Angus, said the students showed a high level of interest and confidence as they argued the moot, “Be it resolved that the Rt. Hon. Norman Washington Manley achieved far more for Jamaica as a Politician than as a Trade Unionist”.
The competition was chaired by Deon Mattis from IRIE FM, while Deputy Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Councilor Sidney Stewart, brought greetings.
