ZIKA FACTS: How MPs Should Spend Funds Allocated to Zika

As part of robust initiatives to tackle the Zika virus outbreak the Ministry of Health is providing $1 million to each of the 63 Members of Parliament (MP) to support activities at the constituency level.
While making the announcement in the House of Representative on June 7, Health Minister, Hon. Dr. Christopher Tufton, noted that the money will be made available as at July 11.
He made it clear that much focus will be placed on areas considered high risk, and that activities will continue through to August.
Minister Tufton outlines the areas to be targeted:
- Training of one thousand (1000) community workers through the HEART Trust/NTA under the guidance of the local Medical Officer of Health.
- Facilitate community and town hall meetings working through agencies such as the Social Development Commission, Neighbourhood Watch and other community based organisations.
- Undertake vector control activities at the community level with the aim of reducing mosquito breeding sites.
- Disseminate educational material.
