Feasibility Study on Air Condition System Using Seawater

The Full Story

A feasibility study is to be done for an air-conditioning energy efficiency system using seawater from the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.

This follows Cabinet’s approval for the Ministry of Transport and Mining, through the Airports Authority of Jamaica, to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with Deprofundis Ingenium SAS to undertake the study.

Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, made the disclosure during a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on June 28.

“If the study proves positive, the implementation of this project would be in line with this Administration’s commitment to use as much of the country’s natural resources to reduce costs and improve energy efficiency,” Senator Reid said.

The France-based company, Deprofundis, specialises in seawater air-conditioning technology.

The entity also offers consultation services to analyse the energy consumption of specific buildings or other areas, and puts forward renewable energy-based solutions.

In the meantime, Senator Reid also informed that Cabinet has authorised the Minister of Science, Energy and Technology to grant a generation licence to Wigton Windfarm in Manchester.

This will give the entity formal permission to supply up to 18 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, using wind from its Wigton II facility.
