Farmers Conference Scheduled For June 25

June 18, 2009

The Full Story

Approximately 7,000 farmers from across Jamaica are being targeted for a one-day marketing conference at the Trelawny multi-purpose stadium on Thursday (June 25).
The conference is being organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), as they culminate their production and marketing drive to advance market driven agricultural production among farmers.
The objective is to have farmers’ production based on sound marketing forecasts, to help them to sell their crops, avoid gluts and shortages, enhance price stability and improve profits. Production and Marketing Organisations (PMO), which comprise groups of farmers at the district level, are responsible for distributing farming inputs channeled through RADA.
The PMOs are community based organisations facilitating farmers’ easy access to vital information and support, related to best practices and marketing.
Main speakers at the conference will be Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding, and Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Dr. Christopher Tufton.
Farmers will hear first hand about new marketing opportunities, agricultural credit, market linkages, agricultural production planning and more. Through seminars and workshops they will be able to share information and discuss concerns and solutions as well as agribusiness investment opportunities.
Numerous agricultural support services will be on display, and farmers will reap significant benefits from the comprehensive selection of experts from the agricultural field and interaction with leading government officials that the occasion will facilitate.
