April 14, 2004

The Full Story

The Government is putting the final arrangements in place for the construction of a new police station in Falmouth, Trelawny, which will also serve the parishes of St. Ann and St. James.
Making the announcement at yesterday’s (April 13) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Information Minister, Senator Burchell Whiteman said that the facility, to be built at a cost of $250 million, would accommodate 100 policemen initially, with capacity for expansion to 150.
Senator Whiteman said the specifications and design of the station were in keeping with the Police Reform and Modernization Programme and the ethos of divisional primacy, and would include offices for the National Investigation Bureau, Organized Crime Unit, Homicide and the Tactical Response and Crime Management Units. It will also provide training and recreational facilities as part of the commitment to improve the working conditions for police officers.
The Ministry of National Security, through a Memorandum of Understanding, has designated the National Works Agency to be the implementing agency to provide overall management, administration and supervision during the construction process.
Senator Whiteman said the arrangements for the conclusion should be finalized within the next six weeks with construction to take place over a 12 month-period.
He said that the Minister of National Security would, later this month, give an update on what was being done to improve police stations across the island.
