Exhibition For Creative Writers

October 15, 2003

The Full Story

Short stories, essays and poems, which copped medals in the 2003 Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Creative Writing Competition, were on exhibition at the Court Yard, Ocean Village Commercial Centre in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, on October 13.
Victim Support Officer in Trelawny, Owen Watson, who launched the exhibition, commended the young writers for their talents and originality, pointing out that writing creatively was one of the art forms in which persons were able to express and interpret themselves and others.
“We read in order to acquire, retain and disseminate knowledge, as we share with others,” Mr. Watson said.He said with such knowledge, through creative writing and reading, persons were able to laugh, cry, and empathise with others, as well as help the country rise to a place of prominence in the wider world.
Giving an overview of the Creative Writing Competition, JCDC Regional Manager for the Northern Region, Marlene Pusey-Reid, said in an attempt to help the Commission realize its mandate to unearth, develop, expose and promote the creative talents of the Jamaican people, the region has been staging the event for several years, aimed at encouraging the writers.
All entries in the competition, which is open to Jamaicans at home and abroad, and all persons residing in Jamaica for a period of two years, must be original, and fall in the categories of poetry, play, short stories, essays, and novels.
The exhibition, which will be in the region from October 13-24, will be at the Ocho Rios High School Library from October 14-16; the St. Ann Parish Library from October 17-21; and at the Brown’s Town High School Library from October 22-24.
