The Full Story

A European Union (EU) study of the investment opportunities in the Caribbean tourism sector will be presented at the 8th Annual Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Investment Conference (CHTIC) scheduled to take place from May 10 to 12 in Montego Bay.
The study is entitled “Partnership Roles and Opportunities for Investors in Tourism” (PROFIT) and aims to promote partnership and investment opportunities in tourism by bringing together Caribbean and European enterprises.
PROFIT will provide a comprehensive report on the Caribbean tourism industry highlighting sector development and investment opportunities and will also identify more than 100 quality tourism business projects regionally.
This study was conducted by PROINVEST, a programme of the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states and the EU for the promotion of investment and technology transfer to ACP countries, stated President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), Godfrey Dyer.
Mr. Dyer was addressing the launch of the CHTIC that took place at the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), Trafalgar Road on April 2. The conference’s theme is “Finding Investment Opportunities in the Caribbean Tourism Sector”.
The JHTA President who gave an overview of the CHTIC, said its objectives included: improving the tourism investment and operating climate across the region, thereby, “making the investment community aware of the development opportunities available in the Caribbean and stimulating a continuing flow of both equity and loan capital in the region.”
Mr. Dyer termed Jamaica’s hosting of the event “a signal honour” and congratulated the Government of Jamaica and the investment agency, JAMPRO for their success in attracting investments to the sector.JAMPRO and the JHTA are the local hosts for the conference, which will be held at the Ritz Carlton Golf and Spa Resort, Rose Hall.
Noting that tourism is and will continue to be the main business activity for Caribbean islands, the JHTA President pledged his association’s continued support for the sector.
“We are fully committed to working within and outside of Jamaica to improve the attractiveness of the region, the quality of the tourism product and to strengthen the linkages between tourism and other sectors of the economy,” he said.
The CHTIC was founded in 1997 by the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) with the objectives of improving the tourism investment and operating climate regionally; making the investment community aware of development opportunities available in the Caribbean and stimulating the flow of equity and loan capital in the region.
