Educator Urges Students to Work Hard to Achieve Greatness

Deputy Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Clement Radcliffe, is urging students to work hard to reach their full potential and achieve greatness.
“Recognise the greatness that you have within you, and work to realise that greatness,” Mr. Radcliffe said.
He was delivering the keynote address at Jamalco’s 2010 Community Scholarships Award ceremony held last week at Halse Hall Great House in Clarendon, where 29 students at the tertiary and secondary levels were provided with non-tuition grants.

The Deputy Chief Education Officer told the scholarship awardees to let investment in their education serve as a platform for lifelong success. “Because you have learnt to chart your future, let this be the launching pad for your future. Whether it is in school, or out of school, the principle is the same. Tell yourselves, ‘if I have the knowledge of what exists, if I work hard to achieve it, the world is mine’,” he stated.
Manager for Corporate Services and Government Affairs at Jamalco, Leo Lambert, in his remarks, informed that the scholarship programme serves to open doors for students with potential, but have limited financial means.
“There is nothing that we do that has more value than the expenditure that we give to education and we do so for a good reason. There is a link between education and a quality society, and Jamalco believes in the ability of our people to excel and do well locally and abroad on any stage, once given an opportunity,” he stated.
Of the 29 scholarship awards, 14 went to high school students in Manchester and Clarendon. The awards are valued at $30,000 each, and students are required to maintain a B+ average, attend school regularly, and have a high level of discipline, to remain on the programme.
A total of 15 bursaries, were awarded to students attending tertiary institutions, with a value of $500,000.
The total expenditure of the company’s educational support for the academic year 2010-2011 amounts to $5 million.
