Marcus Garvey Technical High School in St. Ann is the Region Three winner of the National Food and Nutrition Coordinating Committee of Jamaica (NFNCCJ) 2003 National Schools' Nutrition Quiz for high schools.

The competition, which is being held in collaboration with the Home Economics section of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture, and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI), is aimed at promoting good nutrition and healthy lifestyles among students, and well as at the community level. The islandwide contest is being held under the theme "Working to Improve Household Food Availability and Nutritional Status".

The winning team of four students walked away with a trophy, as well as copies of the book, 'Nutrition Made Simple' by Versada S. Campbell and Dinesh P. Sinna.

Second place went to Aabuthnott Gallimore, which received a trophy, Ocho Rios High took third place, with the lesser places going to Ferncout High and York Castle High. All the students received certificates of participation.

The winning school, as well as the runner-up, will on Friday, October 17, compete in the national finals to be held at Caenwood Centre in Kingston, where a team will be selected to represent Jamaica in the Caribbean Schools' Nutrition Quiz Competition, scheduled for October 29 and 30, via the University of the West Indies (UWI) Distant Education Centre.

NNFCCJ was established in 1985 to improve food safety and nutritional status, particularly for vulnerable groups within the population, through the mobilisation and co-ordination of resources at the national, community, and household levels.

The national schools' nutrition quiz, which started in 1992, is being funded by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) fund.
