Education Ministry on Track to Remove all Pit Latrines from Schools

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information is advanced in its efforts to remove pit latrines from all schools by 2017.

Minister of State in the Ministry, Hon. Floyd Green,  informed that this will be done with the help of the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF); the Culture, Health, Arts, Sport and Education (CHASE) Fund; and Food For The Poor (FFP).

Mr. Green was making his contribution to the 2016/17 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on June 8.

There are pit latrines in 69 schools, down from the more than 200 which existed in 2012.

During the 2014/2015 financial year, 130 schools that utilised pit latrines were targeted for action.

An allocation of $76 million has been made available in the 2016/2017 Budget for the Ministry’s Sanitation Programme.
