Dental Auxiliaries Praised for High Quality of Work

The Full Story

Dental auxiliaries have been praised for their high level of care to Jamaicans over the years.
Consultant in the Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology, Fay Sylvester, said that the body of hygienists and nurses must be commended for the part they had played toward the enhancement of oral health, and by extension, general health care.
Mrs. Sylvester was the guest speaker at the official opening of the 2004 Jamaica Dental Auxiliaries eighth annual conference held at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Hotel, in Ocho Rios under the theme, ‘Dental Auxiliaries, Utilizing Technology for the Enhancement of Oral Health’.
Mrs. Sylvester said the theme reinforced the central role that technology played “in every aspect of our lives including our health and well-being”, adding that scientific and technological advances had moved clinical and laboratory dental practice to new levels during the last decade.
“The rapid advances in new technologies are having a profound impact on the practice of dentistry, where sophisticated devices are being introduced to improve on traditional dental methods and procedures,” she said, observing that not only did new technology hasten the process of design, construction and the use of prostheses, but it also emphasized precision, aesthetics, durability and compatibility of the end products.
Noting that Jamaicans were demanding sophisticated health care, she said the demand for the services of dentists was increasing and it was imperative that dental auxiliaries continued to update themselves to improve their skills and keep in line with technological advancements, thus making the delivery of dental care more efficient and precise.
Others participating in the opening included Dr. Theo Jones, Director of the Dental Auxiliary School; Teresa Green-Falloon, Chairman of the north-east dental auxiliaries; and R. O. Walters, Custos of St. Ann.
Colgate Palmolive has been the major sponsor for the conference for the past eight years.
