CVSS gets $3 Million to Help NGOs

The Council of Voluntary Social Services (CVSS) has received US$50,000 (J$3 million) from the Alcoa Foundation to assist with the implementation of the ‘Social Ventures for Income Generation by Non-Governmental Organizations Project’.
The donation was handed over yesterday (May 11) at the official launch of the project, which is aimed at assisting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to increase their ability to earn income through business activities.
In accepting the donation, Winsome Wilkins, Chief Executive Officer of CVSS, said that through the grant, her organization would be able to provide some training and coaching in establishing sustainable business ventures among NGOs.
“On behalf of the Council of Voluntary Social Services, I want to express sincere appreciation to Alcoa Foundation and Jamalco for its support of the private voluntary sector, through the United Way/CVSS,” she stated.
Mrs. Wilkins added that small grants would be made available to some or all the viable ventures coming out of training workshops, which were a component of the project.
Blossom Laidlaw, Public Relations and Communications Manager at Jamalco in making the donation, expressed the company’s pleasure in assisting the NGOs in their developmental process.
“This is at the heart of what we do to ensure that our NGOs are sustained,” she said.
Giving an overview of the project, Beverley Stewart, Financial Resources Mobilization Specialist with CVSS, explained that the organization would partner with the Jamaica Business Development Centre (JBDC) to offer NGOs through workshops, training, mentoring, business plan development and technical assistance, the opportunity to significantly increase their capacity to generate revenues.
She noted that entrepreneurial coaches would be provided to work along with the new businesses during the first critical months of the intervention.Miss Stewart pointed out that workshops would take place over the next six months with two being held in Kingston and one in Clarendon.
The Council of Voluntary Social Services is the umbrella organization for about 89 NGOs in Jamaica.
