The Full Story

Kingston, August 11, 2017 – The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has said the fireworks shows to mark Jamaica’s 55 anniversary of Independence were “frankly, the best fireworks displays ever seen in the Jamaican sky.”

The Minister’s assessment was contained in a message read on her behalf by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Dr Janice Lindsay, at the ofcial signing and handing over of the certificate for the fireworks shows at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China on Wednesday (August 9).

The Chinese government provided technical assistance for the two fireworks shows — one at the end of the Grand Gala on Sunday and other on Monday at the Kingston waterfront — including materials and technicians.

Minister Grange said she was grateful that the Chinese government thought to “honour the people of Jamaica with the gift of these two fireworks shows that added to the spectacle of our proud celebrations.”

The Ambassador of China to Jamaica, His Excellency Niu Qingbao, said his government was “impressed by the achievements of Jamaica in 55 years of Independence.”

The Ambassador said he was heartened by the warm reception to the fireworks display and that he had noted some cynicism about China’s intentions.

Ambassador Niu made it clear that the gift of the fireworks show was “to show friendship with Jamaica” and that “China has no hidden agenda.”
