The Cuban Government is providing technical support in the development of the Caribbean Regional School of Arts at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, said four lecturers in the area of culture have been working on the project, which falls under a CARICOM-Cuba Cooperation programme agreed on at a CARICOM-Cuba summit in 2014.
They are: Heydi Ramirez Ramirez from the National School of Music in Havana; Arlene Ramirez Soto from the National School of Dance in Havana; Dulce Luz Abon, Head of the theatre department, School of Arts in Santiago; and Martha Gonsalez Paneque from the Professional School of Arts in Granma Province.
Senator Johnson Smith was speaking at a reception held on January 19 at the residence of the Cuban Ambassador to Jamaica, 23 Millsborough Avenue, to celebrate the 58th anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution (National Day of the Republic of Cuba).
Meanwhile, she informed that the technical cooperation programme between the countries will be expanded to include the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in multi-destination tourism.
“Tourism is without a doubt of fundamental importance to both countries and we must therefore work in partnership to operationalise the terms of the agreements to enhance this important industry,” she said.
In his remarks, Cuba’s Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency, Bernardo Guanche Hernandez, said his Government will continue to maintain cooperation in the areas of healthcare and education.
He noted that from January to December 2016, Cuban doctors in Jamaica have treated 157,780 patients, while 1, 638 ophthalmologic surgeries have been performed under the Cuban Operation Miracle Programme.
Ambassador Hernandez said the work of Cuban pathologists in Jamaica will also continue.
He said more Cuban nurses and other professionals will be arriving in the island shortly.
