The Full Story

The St. Ann Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), has embarked on a plan to further reduce crime in the parish.
The parish, last year, experienced an eight per cent reduction in crime, when compared with 2002.In an interview, Ray Palmer, Superintendent in charge of the parish, told JIS News that the police was involved in a programme aimed at networking with several agencies to plan and pursue strategies that would foster a safe and crime-free parish. The groups include the National Works Agency (NWA), National Water Commission (NWC), Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo), the Chamber of Commerce, service clubs, schools and churches.
“Our main objective is to reduce crime, disorder and fear, and to help build trust as well as safe and confident communities,” Mr. Palmer said, adding that “we really want to achieve this through professional service, where the people see us as fair and courteous, respecting human rights, and that we are accountable to them”.
Observing that the parish was blessed with a young, motivated and experienced work force, Superintendent Palmer said, the division was looking at some opportunities in partnership with persons at all levels, where the police could interface with the wider community in an effort to help uplift the country.
He said discussions would be held at community meetings and forums, as well as visits to schools and churches, where various topics on proper policing, and other subjects relating to community development would be presented by the officers, or representatives from the other agencies.
“Part of our programme, is our monthly church service, where as police officers, we meet at a different church each month, and participate in the service by reading the lessons, bringing greetings or have our St. Ann Police Quartet, singing,” Mr. Palmer said, adding that as the police sought to inculcate the virtue of responsibility in the people, “the aim is to involve every single one”.
