April 27, 2004

The Full Story

The Council of the University of the West Indies at its annual business session on Friday, April 23, 2004 chaired by the newly appointed Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, paid tribute to the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford, who will retire on September 30, 2004, after serving six years as head of the regional institution, culminating a career of nearly 50 years at the University of the West Indies. His successor, Professor E. Nigel Harris, who was appointed by the Council in December, 2003 was present at the meeting.
The Council adopted by acclamation, a Resolution hailing the contribution of Vice-Chancellor Nettleford to the University, his own country, the region and the world, particularly in the area of Cultural Studies. It noted the long and productive association he has had with the institution and acknowledged with appreciation his many outstanding contributions to Caribbean life, thought and scholarship; recorded its pride at the high esteem in which Professor Nettleford is held within the Caribbean as well as throughout the world and remarked on his humility and unselfishness in always putting the University of the West Indies above personal accolades.
Several other tributes were paid to Professor Nettleford during the Council session, including the conferral on him of the title Vice Chancellor Emeritus and at the luncheon hosted by the Chancellor, who indicated that the University would be organising a fuller function later in the year to pay proper homage to the Vice-Chancellor.
