The Full Story

Member of Parliament for North West St. Ann, Othneil Lawrence, says that substantial progress has been made in the rehabilitation of community centres in the constituency.
Mr. Lawrence said that centres in Beverly and Dumbarton have already been completed, with funding from his Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation, as well as the Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI).
He said that partnerships are being pursued with internet service providers, to provide internet access to the homework centres.
“We continue to upgrade the recreational facilities at these centres to foster the promotion of sporting activities, with the strategic input of the Social Development Commission (SDC), supported by the CDF and private stakeholders,” he stated.
He said that a multi-purpose centre, currently being constructed in the community of Lewis, is about 80 per cent complete. He added that over 20 community groups and youth clubs have been assisted with donations of sporting gear and equipment.
Mr. Lawrence was making his contribution to the 2009/10 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (July 28).
He informed the House that Sturge Town had won first prize in the Better Environment for Social Transformation (BEST) competition, this year.
The competition is aimed at the sustainable development of communities. It encourages self-help activities. It also seeks to establish partnerships between communities and persons who have technical, professional, spiritual, educational and financial capabilities.
Sturge Town also won awards for youth development, cultural heritage, most improved agricultural practices, best community spirit and self-reliance. He congratulated the residents on their success.
