The Full Story

Three refurbished fire trucks and an ambulance, valued at $9.6 million, will be donated to the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI), by the Government of Japan.

This is aimed at improving the emergency response capability of the CMI to the people of Port Royal and Harbour View, in East Kingston.

Funding for the units is being provided through the Japanese Government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Project.

Signing of the agreement for the donation took place on March 30 at the campus of the CMI, between the Japanese Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Masanori Nakano and Executive Director of the CMI, Dr. Fritz Pinnock.

One of the fire trucks and the ambulance will be located at the CMI, Palisadoes Road; another fire truck will be placed at the fire station in Port Royal and the other truck will be temporarily located at the Donald Quarrie High School, in Harbour View.

Ambassador Nakano said the fire trucks and ambulance will enable the residents of Port Royal and other areas to be better served during emergencies.

“Having learnt of the urgent need by the Caribbean Maritime Institute to upgrade the emergency response system, our Embassy contacted the Society for Promotion of Japanese Diplomacy (SPJD) in Japan, which willingly agreed to donate one ambulance and three fire trucks,” he said.

For his part, Dr. Pinnock explained that the donation is significant, which will enhance the country’s ability to provide safer communities.

“We will now be able to respond to requests for emergency services.  The majority of emergencies now are not for fire, but for medical response. All our senior cadets and officers have advanced fire-fighter training and are certified by the International Maritime Organization in Emergency Medical Services,” he noted.
